Veteran book editor Robert B. Wyatt in his first novel delivers a story about books, computers, cats, and friendships in upstate New York. Jamison "Jam" James, a bookstore owner discovers a carton containing a MacBook left behind after the death of his wife, Bay. At first reluctant to deal with the computer, he ceremoniously opens the box at the insistence of the Macs, a circle of his wife's friends devoted to Macintosh technologies. The opening of the box heralds a new life for the grieving bookseller as the motley Macs-a radio announcer, a musician, a writer, two students, and a businessman-share their knowledge of Jam's late wife, a charismatic village do-gooder who has concealed her past. Jam's increasing curiosity is piqued when Rosa, a glamorous stranger, comes to town in hopes of writing an article about Bay. Jam's life is beset by complications provoked by the Macs, Rosa, and other friends from Bay's past, as well as a couple of over-sensitive cats, who harbor additional secrets. As old memories merge with discoveries, Jam's quiet attraction to the young woman provides an unexpected understanding of his wife's amazing hidden life, bringing him back around to happiness. Jam the Box Robert B Wyatt 9780982502709 Books

As the story opens, Jam learns that he has become a widower, literally over-night. Suddenly, he is left without the beloved wife whom he barely knew. But from that sad beginning, you will read this heart-warming and inventive story with a smile on your face. Everything ambles nimbly along to a conclusion that you will NOT see coming. After it (the conclusion) arrives, you will gasp ... and then smile again. Wyatt's charming story of Jam James and his wonderful life lesson is meant to be read and appreciated as a pair with "The Fluffies and Box" -- the same sequence of events seen from the (improbable but credible) point of view of Jam's two cats. These tales are distinctive principally for their incredibly affirmative point of view. They are both unusual and charming and a source of real refreshment for those used to the irony and bitterness of contemporary fiction.

Jam the Box Robert B Wyatt 9780982502709 Books Reviews

Jam and the Box was a delightful read. I live in a small New England town and felt right at home in this book's world and amongst characters that seem very familiar. Loved the "mystery" and how it led me through the book. Look forward to reading more Wyatt books.
Captivating story line that kept interest throughout. I especially appreciated the insightful view the author obviously possesses regarding the way cats (seem to) think. For example, the loyalty and concern cats have for their people. and their distress regarding change to routine.

Especially recommended to anyone who enjoys cats, or any animal pets, for that matter.

Excellent!
"Jam and the Box" features an eccentric, caring and loveable cast of small town New England characters. The refreshingly upbeat story takes a number of surprising twists and turns that make the book a real page-turner. A modern day tale reminiscent of Maupin's beloved "Tales of the City" series, I was thrilled to see Wyatt has already written a related book, the novella "The Fluffies and the Box." Here's hoping the series will continue. I know the characters have a lot more life to live and I want to be there for each and every one of their adventures.
This is quite a surprise package. I read Jam & the Box first and then The Fluffys & the Box, the same story from the point of view of two cats. Then I wondered how it would have been to read them in the reverse order. They shed light on each other. Jam & the Box is a droll, sharp-edged comedy of manners in a Catskill town full of eccentrics you couldn't invent. The box is a Mac delivery box that arrives for the suddenly deceased wife of an oldstyle used bookstore owner who is resistant to the new technology. It's a story of the struggle we all have to keep up with an endlessly changing and often startling world. It casts a dark eye, especially on the cranky bookseller, but its affection for modern madness shines through. The cats in The Fluffys have a mordant take on the human goings-on, but are ok as long as they're properly fed. I want to know what happens to these characters and their couplings after the story ends. Separately or together, these two books are something truly original, and leave room for more.
In this amusing and touching novel about colorful residents of a small town in the Hudson Valley, we follow a group of men who bond over their MacBooks but have a rougher time with families and lovers. The plot revolves around the mysterious, beautiful stranger, Rosa. And the biggest surprise is revealed only in the final pages. Not confined to humans, the book also features two cats (the Fluffys) who have written their own companion novella The Fluffys & the Box to reveal the rest of the story.
For THE FLUFFYS & THE BOX * * * *

I would have also given this five stars, but thought better of it because it is a novella and a fraction the length of its companion volume, JAM & THE BOX, which richly deserves all its stars. It has all the humor and mystery of JAM. The dual narrative of the two Fluffys, however, is distinctly feline and darker and sexier. The two books should be read together because that experience provides the whole story as only a man and his cats can tell it. Several weeks after reading their version, I can?t forget the cats? amusingly scrambled version of their recovery from sorrow and loss. Not to be missed.

For JAM & THE BOX* * * * *

I was a bit nervous when in the first page of JAM & THE BOX, the protagonist awakens to find he is a widower and has been left with two grouchy and nameless felines and a MacBook carton, which would soon be taken up as a residence by the cats. As I turned the pages increasingly quickly, a mystery developed as Jam, the bookseller, a colorful gang of small town folk, and Jam's cats were into turmoil worthy of Pandora, herself. A Russian writer (maybe Dostoyevsky) once said, a novel is about one of two things a stranger comes to town or someone goes on a quest. JAM & THE BOX is about both. Robert B.Wyatt puts an amusing and often moving spin on the notion. The pleasure was doubled when I also read the companion novella, THE FLUFFYS & THE BOX.
Wyatt's charming story of Jam James and his wonderful life lesson is meant to be read and appreciated as a pair with "The Fluffies and Box" -- the same sequence of events seen from the (improbable but credible) point of view of Jam's two cats.
